This is how I, the RTL reporter, got into Donald Trump's luxury resort
It's Saturday 23rd January. Trump has only been out of office for a few days. I'm currently shooting a feature for RTL Exclusiv in Palm Beach, Florida. The place where Trump's golf resort Mar-a-Lago is located - you can see the footage of my shoot in the video. I am interviewing the Austrian society lady Hermé de Wyman Miro, we have known each other for years. At the end of the interview she says: “Let's eat at Mar-a-Lago. I'm a member there.” The fee to join the private club is $200,000. Hermé de Wyman Miro is good friends with Trump's sister and had already seen and spoken to the ex-president in the days before. As she tells me this, I don't anticipate what's about to happen.
A cheese sandwich, a crab cake, a piece of chocolate cake - and Donald Trump
We order at the restaurant at Trump's luxury resort. A cheese sandwich, a crab cake, the chocolate torte named after Donald Trump. I feel observed. Because the ex-president is still being guarded by the Secret Service – and the agents are looking at us severely. Even before we ordered, there was a clear message: no photos, no videos. You can only snap your own table. And then I realize why that is. Suddenly Donald Trump comes running towards us personally!
Donald Trump looks straight at me - I have to look twice
Trump, very casual. Without a suit, without his Make America Great Again cap. And without Melania! Where is she I wonder? Hermé de Wyman Miro doesn't have an answer either.
Only one assistant accompanies Donald Trump. The ex-president looks at both of us because we are the only customers on the restaurant terrace. I have to look twice because in my life I never expected to see Donald Trump live here - a few meters away from me.to talk to him? No chance! His assistant and the Secret Service agents use their body language to tell me not to try.
I finish my lunch, thank my hostess and make my way to the entrance. And then I see Donald Trump again. In a meeting room. The door is open. The ex-president is in a good mood. He's in the room with some people. I don't recognize anyone. Two security men in front of the room. What is Trump talking about? I dont know. "We'll come back in one form or another," he said on his last day in office. Maybe he's hatching his plan here.
