Angelique Kerber has reached the final of the Australian Open by beating the British Johanna Konta. The 28-year-old is in a Grand Slam final for the first time in her career - on Saturday she will face Serena Williams. However, the Bremen native has prominent support - and she was already very enthusiastic after her semi-final triumph, as can be seen on Twitter.
Success in Australia
"Congratulations to @AngeliqueKerber!!! Great tennis and good nerves", wrote someone who should know: Boris Becker. Oliver Pocher, friend of tennis ace Sabine Lisicki, commented briefly on Twitter: "Sovereign!! Good luck for Saturday!!!"
But there was also congratulations from the football faction: "We congratulate @AngeliqueKerber, who was born in Bremen, on reaching the final of the AustralianOpen and we're keeping our fingers crossed for Saturday!" said SV Werder Bremen. Bremen's next opponent in the Bundesliga, Hertha BSC, used Kerber's triumph for a little dig: "Congratulations @AngeliqueKerber. Get that thing! Your favorite team @werderbremen has no reason to be happy on Saturday!"
National player Toni Kroos is apparently also a tennis fan, he tweeted: "Congratulations @AngeliqueKerber! All the best for the final" - and then cheered on Roger Federer. "FINALEEEE! The madness @AngeliqueKerber And now pull through - in the truest sense of the word", ex-ski star Maria Höfl-Riesch also celebrates the German tennis hope. And sports moderator Matthias Opdenhövel writes with a view to Saturday: "And now grab @serenawilliams in the final."
