The 'Avatar' actress recalled meeting the star of the '60s sci-fi series, who passed away last week at the age of 89. She played the role Zoe played in J. J. Abrams directed the film, which also starred Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and Chris Pine.
The 44-year-old actress wrote on Instagram on Monday, "I knew I had big shoes to fill when I was cast as Uhura and Nichelle made me feel safe and told me, I should play them with all the confidence in the world. I hope we continue to keep her memory alive by celebrating her amazing work and spreading the message of peace and equality among all people. She lived a long, influential life and was not only successful but helped many others to succeed."
Zoe added that she was "sad" at her death, calling her a "true star" and "ahead of her time". Speaking of meeting the late icon, Saldana said: "Meeting Nichelle was truly a very special moment in my life. Her energy was infectious every time I was in her presence. She convinced me that anything is possible, if you try."
