Prince Haakon and Princess Mette-Marit of Norway are one of THE dream couples in royal circles. Coming from such different backgrounds, the couple had to face a lot of odds. In 1999, the love story of the Norwegian nobleman and the middle-class daughter of a journalist began at the Quart Festival. Now the two reveal it was love at first sight.
He saw me, he understood me
It's a love story like in a fairy tale! And even today, after 22 years together, including 20 years of marriage, Mette-Marit and Haakon can be seen how happy they make each other. In public appearances you can literally feel the love and closeness between the royals. And now it's clear: the chemistry was right from the start.
The website Svenskdam.se quotes from an interview the couple gave on public broadcaster NRK. In it, the two also talked about their first moments together. "He saw me, he understood me. He was curious,” the 48-year-old describes her impression of Haakon at the time. And the Norwegian prince was immediately impressed. “She impressed me,” he enthuses. When Mette-Marit enters a room, you can hardly escape her aura. He also felt a sense of security from the start.
No problem that she was already a mom
The fact that Mette-Marit already had a son, Marius, wasn't a problem for him, Haakon continues. That didn't make her any less attractive to him at the time. On the contrary: it showed him that she was ready to take responsibility. The great love between the two was finally able to convince King Harald of Norway. For him, Mette-Marit, who had an illegitimate child and a reputation as a party queen, was initially not the partner he wanted for his son.
But Haakon prevailed. With Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway and Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway, he and his Mette now have two children together and live in a happy marriage.
